April 2003 Raytheon Co, Bedford, Mass, is being awarded a sole source contract to deliver an initial Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) radar as the first radar in the BMDS family of radars. This effort is in response to the Secretary of Defense direction to begin fielding an initial missile defense capability. This sole-source contract to Raytheon will provide an initial step for this direction by procuring a radar that will be available for test in March 2005. The estimated total value of the contract with options is $800 million. The Missile Defense Agency is the contracting activity. |
